Taylor Swift (aka ‘Blondie’ aka ‘T-Swizzle’) is soon to Save the World….
High Quality CPR is essential to survival post cardiac arrest. The right rate, usually 100-120 ( although faster rates have been proposed) and the right depth (5cm in the adult patient) are the accepted goals.
Music and metronomes have been used to ensure an adequate rate of cardiac comressions in the emergency department. The Bee Gee’s ‘Staying Alive’, is often quoted as the best music to have on, not only for it’s beat rate (100-120), but also for its inspiring title. However that seems to now be so yesterday……… Enter Taylor Swift.
In a recent letter to the Editor in the Journal of Resuscitation (1), a list of 60 Taylor Swift songs was proposed for OHCA. The authors express their concern that women who have OHCA are less likely to receive bystander CPR compared to men. They also “believe that engaging with Taylor Swift’s music would raise awareness for the importance of bystander CPR and community CPR initiatives”.
We know Swift is one of the most influential artists of all time, she can influence countries’ economies, encourage populations to vote, “change the course of mighty rivers” etc . … but now it seems she may also be able to save lives.
Here’s what I really think: If Taylor Swift’s fanbase which is millions and millions of fans, all learnt to perform high quality basic life support, there’d be a lot more survivors of out of hospital cardiac arrest. Go Swifties and make it happen!
